Arizona's Trusted Storytellers
The people behind the Tucson Mural Tour, and why they built it.
The Story
Freaky Foot Tours started in 2015 when Susan Johnson and Nick Jones, mother and son, launched their first guided walking tour in Flagstaff, Arizona. Susan Johnson had spent years researching local history for a book published by The History Press. The tours grew out of that research: stories too good to stay on the page.
Over the next decade, the company expanded across Arizona. Flagstaff, Prescott, and Tucson. Ghost tours came first, but the model was always the same: original research, local guides, stories told on the streets where they happened.
After bringing its haunted history tour to Tucson, Freaky Foot Tours launched the Tucson Mural Tour. The city's downtown art scene had been growing for years, fueled by Rock the Spot festivals, new commissions, and artists like Ignacio Garcia whose work was transforming entire blocks. The stories behind these walls deserved the same treatment the company had always given its historical tours: deep research, cultural respect, and guides who know the artists by name.
"A mural is a public memory. It is what a city chooses to say out loud."
The Tucson Mural Tour is the result of months of archival research, artist interviews, and route testing. Every stop was chosen for its story, not just its visual impact. The guides do not read from scripts. They tell stories they have spent time learning, about artists they have spent time getting to know.

Why This Tour Is Different
ARTIST-LEVEL STORYTELLING
Every stop leads with the artist: who they are, what drives them, and why they chose this wall. Not just what a mural looks like, but what it means.
ORIGINALLY RESEARCHED
Months of archival research, artist interviews, and route development. The stories on this tour are not pulled from Wikipedia or tourism brochures.
GUIDES WHO KNOW THE ARTISTS
The guides on the Tucson Mural Tour know these artists by name and these streets by heart. The difference shows at every stop.
